A turnstile driver is an electronic device used to control the movement of a turnstile, serving as one of the key components that enable the turnstile to automatically open and close. A turnstile driver typically consists of a motor, a controller, and sensors.

Through the coordinated operation of motors, controllers, and sensors, the turnstile drive unit enables the automatic opening and closing of turnstiles. It not only provides a convenient access solution but also enhances security and operational efficiency in various facilities. Turnstile drive units are widely deployed in public venues such as airports, subways, shopping malls, and office buildings, offering a streamlined and secure passage for people entering and exiting.

First, the core component of a turnstile drive system is the motor. The motor serves as the power source that drives the turnstile’s movement; common types include DC motors and AC motors. DC motors feature a wide speed-regulation range and high starting torque, making them well suited for applications with stringent speed requirements. In contrast, AC motors are characterized by their simple structure and low cost, rendering them ideal for general-purpose applications. The motor transmits power to the turnstile’s mechanical components via either an axial or parallel transmission mechanism, thereby enabling the turnstile to open and close.

The turnstile drive unit also requires a controller to manage motor operation. The controller serves as the “brain” of the turnstile drive, receiving signals from sensors and controlling the motor’s operating state according to system requirements. Through programming, the controller can implement various opening and closing modes, such as card-based access and facial recognition-based access. Additionally, the controller can interface with other systems to enable data sharing and management.

Sensors constitute the perception component of the turnstile drive unit, responsible for detecting the approach or passage of individuals. Common sensor types include infrared sensors, ultrasonic sensors, and microwave radar sensors. These sensors can detect when a person is approaching, transmit the corresponding signal to the controller, and thereby trigger the turnstile to open or close.
