Servo motor (A servo, or servomotor) is a simple electric motor used in conjunction with a servo mechanism to facilitate control. When the motor serves as the controlled device, the DC motor is typically associated with the servo mechanism.
In that case, it is commonly referred to as a DC servo motor. If the motor is operated and controlled using AC, it is called an AC servo motor.


A servo motor is a linear or rotary actuator that enables precise control of linear or angular position, acceleration, and velocity. It consists of a motor coupled with a sensor for position feedback.
It also requires a relatively complex controller, typically a dedicated module specifically designed for servo motors.


Servo Motor Theory
There are certain specialized motor applications in which the motor is required to rotate only through a specific angle. For such applications, we need specially designed motors and custom mounting arrangements.
To enable a motor to rotate through a specified angle in response to a given electrical input (signal), servo motors were developed.

 

A servo motor is usually a simple DC motor , using an auxiliary servo mechanism (a typical closed-loop feedback control system) to control a specific angular rotation.
Today, servo systems are widely used in industrial applications.

 

Servo motors are also commonly used in remote-controlled toy cars to control the direction of movement, and they are widely employed as the motors that drive the trays of portable CD or DVD players.
In addition, we encounter hundreds of servo motor applications in our daily lives.

 

The primary reason for using a servo is its angular precision: it rotates precisely as commanded and then stops, waiting for the next signal to proceed.
Unlike a standard electric motor, a servo motor starts rotating as soon as power is applied and continues to rotate until the power is turned off. We have no control over the motor’s rotational progress.
However, we can only control the rotation speed and can turn it on and off.
